Sarah-Jane is a fully qualified dance teacher with the British Ballet Organisation, after achieving a distinction award in the Level 4 Teaching Diploma in Theatre Dance, with a major in Tap Dance. She is also an official ZUMBA® instructor with the ZUMBA® fitness programme.
Sarah-Jane has been teaching at Danceworks for three years, working with students of all ages, sharing her enthusiasm for dance and helping them to build confidence and ability in their chosen dance genre. She also works off-site around Gloucestershire, running workshop events for Danceworks at secondary and primary schools, introducing both experienced and non-dancers to exciting and unusual dance styles such as Bollywood and Street. Sarah-Jane also takes Danceworks into holiday workshops in private dance schools (including the Danceworks summer school!), teaching choreography from various stage and film musicals such as High School Musical, Oklahoma and Chicago.
Sarah-Jane has been dancing since the age of eight and trained with Sandra Oakley in Southampton up to the age of eighteen. She played the role of Pearl in the schools’ production of Starlight Express and danced in numbers from Grease, Me & My Girl and Jesus Christ Superstar. As an adult Sarah-Jane progressed further with her dancing with the ISTD, whilst exploring alternative styles of dance such as Salsa, Swing, Bhangra and Appalacian. Travelling the world helped her to further explore international dance styles such as the traditional Maori war dances performed in New Zealand, fire dancers on the streets of Melbourne and Japanese Geisha performing in Kyoto to celebrate the cherry blossoms.
Sarah-Jane’s Adult Tap classes (beginners and intermediate levels) are based on American rhythm style tap, with a focus on building students’ knowledge of steps into a vibrant and rhythmic dance routine. Either as a way to keep fit or to experience something different in the field of dance, come and make some noise in class with SJ!
Her Street Dance classes for Teenagers and Adults are also full of energy; designed to build confidence through the body movements and to develop strength and co-ordination, whilst working towards a funky dance routine. Don’t worry if you have never danced before, this is a chance to build your personal confidence and develop your own dance style in a relaxed environment.
